About an issue occurring on servers based on Intel seventh (7th)-generation processors due to Windows updates provided from April 2017

Published: June 05, 2017
Updated: June 29, 2017

Windows updates provided by Microsoft from April 2017 have caused an issue in which the Windows Update fails on PC servers based on Intel seventh (7th)-generation processors.

As for NEC PC servers (Express5800/100 series), new models released in April 2017 are affected by this issue.

Microsoft (USA) updated the information to address this issue and NEC announces the solutions and our policy for Express5800 servers.

Affected models

  • Experss5800/R110i-1
  • Experss5800/T110i
  • Experss5800/T110i-S

* Some servers based on 6th generation processers (Xeon E3-12XXv5[XX represents any number]) do not experience this issue.)

Affected operating systems

As a result of our internal investigation, NEC has confirmed that the following OSs experienced this issue:

  • Windows Server 2012 R2
  • Windows Server 2008 R2

* This issue will not occur when the above OSs are used as guest OS.

Update programs which cause this issue

  • Windows Server 2012 R2
    • KB4015550 (2017-04 Security Monthly Quality Rollup)
    • KB4015547 (2017-04 Security Only Quality Update)
    • KB4015553 (2017-04 Preview of Monthly Quality Rollup)
    • KB4019215 (2017-05 Security Monthly Quality Rollup)
    • KB4019213 (2017-05 Security Only Quality Update)
    • KB4019217 (2017-05 Preview of Monthly Quality Rollup)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
    • KB4015549 (2017-04 Security Monthly Quality Rollup)
    • KB4015546 (2017-04 Security Only Quality Update)
    • KB4015552 (2017-04 Preview of Monthly Quality Rollup)
    • KB4019264 (2017-05 Security Monthly Quality Rollup)
    • KB4019263 (2017-05 Security Only Quality Update)
    • KB4019265 (2017-05 Preview of Monthly Quality Rollup)

Environment where this issue occurs and the current status

When you try to scan or download updates through Windows Update in an environment to which any of
the "update programs" listed above has been applied, you receive the following error message:

Unsupported hardware
Your PC uses a processor that is designed for the latest version of Windows. Because the processor is not supported together with the Windows version that you are currently using, your system will miss important security updates.

Additionally, you may see an error message in the Windows Update window that resembles the following:

Windows could not search for new updates
An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer.
Error(s) found:
Code 80240037 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

(The above descriptions are extracted from the website described later.)

Solutions

Windows Server 2012 R2

The issue can be resolved by 2017-06 Security Monthly Quality Rollup (KB4022726).

Please apply the Rollup in the following procedure.

  1. Download "KB4022726" from Microsoft Update Catalog, and save it to an arbitrary drive.
  2. From the downloaded program, extract .cab file and save it to an arbitrary folder.
  3. Execute the following command to apply the update.
    DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath: <the path to the extracted .cab file>

Example:

  1. Download msu file of KB4022726 to "D Drive\msu".
  2. Deploy the downloaded msu file to "D Drive\cab".
    expand –f:* D: \msu\<the downloaded msu file> D:\cab
  3. Execute command DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:D:\cab\Windows8.1-KB4022726-x64.cab

"KB4022726" can be applied through Windows Update. To be safe, confirm that KB4022726 is included in the update deployment report.

Windows Server 2008 R2

The Security Monthly Quality Rollup in June will not fix this issue. Windows Server 2008 R2 on a PC server based on Intel seventh generation processors will not be supported.
In response to the changes in the Microsoft support policy, NEC supports the servers only with the sixth generation processor (N8101-943F or N8101-944F) for Windows Server 2008 R2.

For more information, please refer to System Configuration Guide.

Please consider using Windows Server 2008 R2 as guest OS, since Windows Server 2008 R2 used as guest OS on a virtual infrastructure such as Hyper-V and VMware is still supported without changes even on the affected models which are no longer supported as described above.

Reference Information

On the following Microsoft (USA)’s website, they announce that the above operating systems are not supported(as of April 27). We are confirming the authenticity of this information with Microsoft.
