Support Information for Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V on Express5800 Series Servers

This webpage provides support information for Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V on Express5800 Series servers. Before you use Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V, please read the description for appropriate server model.

Available Guest Operating Systems

The following are available as guest operating systems on Express5800 Series servers. A specific Service Pack (“SP”) is required for some operating systems.
When you use Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V on the Express 5800 Series servers, you should apply “Hyper-V Integration Services” to the guest operating system.
(“Hyper-V Integration Services” is a package of services that improve the performance and operability of a system in a Hyper-V virtualization environment.）

Considerations and Restrictions

Restrictions on Using Dynamic Memory on a Guest Operating System
When you use the Dynamic Memory feature on Windows Server 2008 Standard（SP2） running as a guest operating system, apply KB2230887.
SR-IOV (Single Root I/O Virtualization) Feature
The SR-IOV feature is currently not supported on Express 5800 Series servers.
Considerations for Exporting Virtual Machine
If you export a virtual machine with a physical CD/DVD drive allocated to it, the virtual machine settings for CD/DVD drive may show "Physical Drive Not Found" when you import the data. (The import itself is done successfully.)

If a physical CD/DVD drive is allocated to the virtual machine, cancel the allocation before exporting the virtual machine.
Restriction on Using Generation 2 Virtual Machine
The following issues will occur when you install Windows Server 2012 or Windows 8 (x64) on a generation 2 virtual machine.
  • You cannot use the physical keyboard until the installation is done.
  • You cannot use the physical keyboard in Windows Recovery Environment(Windows RE).
When you need to enter a product key to install a guest operating system, click on the keyboard icon on the right side of the input box to use the software keyboard.
When you need to specify the partition size, adjust the size using the UP/Down allows on the right side of the input box.
Considerations for Executing Sysprep on a Virtual Machine
The following issues will occur if you execute Sysprep after installing the Hyper-V Integration Services on guest operationg systems(KB2923655.)

Issue 1: The following types of guest operating systems do not boot.

  • Windows Server 2012 on a generation 1 or generation 2 virtual machine
  • Windows 8 (x64) on a generation 2 virtual machine

Issue 2: Error occurs in Device Manager on the following types of guest operating systems.

  • Windows 8 (x86/x64) on a generation 1 virtual machine

Take ether of the following workarounds if you execute Sysprep on those guest operating systems.

  • Applying KB2779768 to the guest operating system before executing Sysprep.
  • Applying KB2822241 to the guest operating system before executing Sysprep.
  • Using /mode: VM option when executing Sysprep.
Considerations for Using a Physical CD/DVD Drive on a Guest Operating System
On a ft server, do not let a physical CD/DVD drive remain allocated to a virtual machine. The guest operating system may stall if the PCI module is detached and the primary module is switched while the physical CD/DVD drive remain allocated to the virtual machine.
